Crete, the largest island of Greece

Crete is Greece’s largest island and It is situated near the Southern border of Greece, about 160Km (99miles) away from the Greek mainland. It has a total surface of 8336 Square Kilometers and counts 4 ‘big’ cities and prefectures. Join me in discovering them one by one!

Discover the city of Heraklion

Heraklion (pronounced as Iraklion) is situated on the North-east side of the island and is the very densely populated capital of the island. The city is hugged by the mountain range of Idi (Mt. Psiloritis) on it’s west side and Mt. Dikti (or Lassithiotika) on its east side and is an important shipping and ferry port as well as a very busy international airport named by the native writer Nikos Kazantzakis.

Stroll along the 16th century Koules-fortress with a beautiful view over the harbor, or go grocery shopping on 1866 street or (Greek: odós 1866). This is an area with lots of food shops where you can buy fresh fruit, vegetables, fish or meat. Also worth a walk to, is the Morosini-fountain down Venizelou square that has become kind of a symbol for the city and is dated beginning of the 17th century. If you like visiting local churches, then you should definitely pay a visit to the Saint Titus or Agios Titos church located down August-25th street (Greek: Odos 25 Avgoustou). This church was built during the byzantine era, conquered by the Arabs and possessed by the Turks and functioned as a mosque even after it was destroyed by an severe earthquake beginning of the 19th century only to become Greek, and thus a Christian orthodox church, at the beginning of the 20th century.

Fancy a day of shopping for clothes and accessories? Then you might find what you are looking for on Dedalu street (Odos Dedalu) and in the streets located around the Morosini-fountain.

If you love history, these should be on the top of your list:

1.The Archaeological museum of Crete: That contains the richest collection of finds from the Minoan period in the world takes you on a trip through the 3000 years old history of the island. This is one of the most important and largest museums in Greece and definitely worth your visit.

2.The Historical museum of Crete: This museum will let you discover the traditions and folklore or Crete throughout the centuries also giving you a taste of local art.

3.The Museum of natural history of Crete: This museum is focusing on the development of nature, the specific flora and fauna of Crete and the natural phenomena that have had an influence on it throughout the years.

But you have not yet visited Heraklion if you have not been to Knossos!

Knossos

The old city of Knossos lies about 5 Km outside of Heraklion and is a “must see”, offering impressive excavations of the ancient royal city of the Minoans. It is also considered to be the oldest city of Europe, being about 4000 years old. Get swept away by the myths about Theseus and the Minotaurus and many other stories that are said to tell the story of this “mysterious Kingdom’.

Greek food and drinks

Can be found in almost every corner of the city center, however not all of them are equally good. Try to avoid the places that are located directly next to the places of interest, sometimes just in a narrow street away from the masses you will find many Greeks enjoying their meal on a terrace, that is usually a good sign for quality for your money.

Discover Rethymnon or is it Rethimno?

The third remarkable city and prefecture of Crete is Rethymnon that is situated on the northern coast of Crete and about 80 Km away from the capital, Heraklion. Rethymnon is a beloved vacation resort that offers a lively city center with plenty of shops with local products and archaeological replica’s, jewelry and restaurants but also beautiful hotels right by the beach. The Rethymnon night-life is famous, with its many bars and open-air discotheques.

At the northwest side of Rethymnon you will find the old Fortezza Citadel (fortress) built in the 16th century by the Venetians. (You can take a guided tour here.) The port of Rethymno is the third biggest port of Crete after Heraklion and Chania and has played a significant role for the economy throughout the many years of its existence. The area around the Fortezza and the port are certainly worth an evening stroll, as the atmosphere is very chill and inviting with many terrasses, shops and restaurants..

History & Cretan music

If you love history the Archaeological museum of Rethymnon should not miss on your planning.  It shows many findings like ceramics, coins and jewelry that was found in the area and is dated back to the Minoan, Hellenistic and Roman period and next to it is the Museum of Cretan Lyra, an instrument strongly connected with the Cretan traditional music.

The monastery of Arcadia & Preveli

Situated on a plateau about 23 Km outside of Rethymnon is the Monastery of Arcadia. Built during the 16th century it is now a Greek Orthodox Monastery. The building shows many Renaissance influences like ornaments and baroque paintings. During the Ottoman possession it is said to have served as a secret school and many claim that it is thanks to this that the Greek language survived after the occupation. The monastery has been a rich and independent community for many years and played a significant role during the independence war of the island at the end of the Ottoman occupation. A similar contribution to the islands history was made by the Preveli Monastery, about 40 Km away from the city of Rethymnon. You can eventually combine your visit to these remarkable buildings in a day-trip starting with Arkadia and ending in Preveli. Preveli is situated in at the south coast and is well known for its palm tree filled beach sides and it’s lake.

Sfendoni Caves

Other places of interest around Rethymnon are the Sfendoni caves near the village Zoniana with various stalactites and Stalagmites.

The city and prefecture of Chania that also claims to be the second capital of Crete, is situated at the Western-north coast of the island and has its own operating airport where you can also fly directly to from abroad. The city consists of the old town, surrounded by venetian walls, and the new city, built outside of these walls. The venetian port and the old town are more than worth your visit, as they are rated amongst the most beautiful towns around the Mediterranean. Small streets and a variety of architectural styles reflect the rich history of Chania. Arabs, venetians and Ottomans have all left their footprints in the city. The Samaria Clove

Hiking lovers should not miss out the Samaria clove, that is situated amongst the so called white mountains and is the longest clove in Europe counting 18 Km. (11.2 Miles)

It starts at about 1200 meters height and ends at the west-south-coast near the village of Agia Roumeli.

Taking the walk through Samaria you will discover many sorts of vegetation and animals, amongst which the wild goats living in the area, so called ‘kri-kri’. The walk also passes the old village of Samaria that has been abandoned since 1962. The whole area is protected by Unesco and other nature organizations and it is strictly prohibited to touch any flower or stone at your passing.

Other beautiful day trips that will inspire you...

Phaistos

Amidst the mountains of Psiloritis, the highest mountain of Crete, and mount Asterousa lies the Messara plain, one of the most fertile areas of Crete, and an area populated with small settlements during Minoan times. Next to these settlements is where the ancient palace of Phaistos is situated.

Destroyed at least three times during history this palace was rebuilt each time, using the older version as the fundament for the new one. Take a dive into history walking past monumental staircases, pillar crypts and the king’s Megaron and imagine how it was to live there, during ancient times…

Off track and into Cretan nature!

If you are looking for beautiful beaches in the west side of Crete and like travelling by jeep then you will certainly love the trip to Elafonissi beach and Paralia Kedrodasos a bit further by the coast or a visit to the Chrysoskalitissa monastery combined with a swim in the Aspri Limni (white lake).
